What that spread means when we plan a visit:
- Apartment buildings. In Yonkers and New Rochelle 38.1% of homes are in buildings of 20 or more units. Tell us about elevator bookings, parking and the hours your building allows work.
- Large houses. North Castle's median home has 7.8 rooms, Scarsdale's and Pound Ridge's 9 or more. Give us the room and bathroom counts, since they set the length of a first visit.
- Old houses. 46.4% of the homes in the town of Mamaroneck predate 1940. Plaster, radiators, deep trim and original floors take hand work; point out any finish you want treated gently.
- Renters. 142,281 households rent, 43,908 of them in Yonkers, which is why move-out cleaning matters here.

Sales tax on house cleaning in Westchester
New York taxes interior cleaning of a home, whether you book one visit or a year of them (Tax Department memo TSB-M-91(4)S). The combined state and local rate is 8.375% everywhere in Westchester except the city of Yonkers, where it is 8.875% (Publication 718, rates effective 1 March 2025). Mount Vernon, New Rochelle and White Plains report under their own codes but carry the same 8.375% as the rest of the county.
Carpet, rug, drapery and upholstery cleaning is the exception. New York lists it with laundering and dry cleaning as an exempt service (Tax Bulletin ST-740), so carpet and upholstery cleaning carries no sales tax here.
Short-term rental and rental rules in Westchester towns
The rules change from one city or town to the next. Here is what the codes of the county's five largest places by households say, read 19 September 2026.
| Where | What the rule says | Where it is written (read 19 Sep 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Vernon | One-year short-term-rental permit from the Building Department, only in the owner's or tenant's occupied primary residence; barred in fully rent-regulated buildings, IDA PILOT buildings and where the lease forbids it. | Zoning Ch. 267, Art. XV (Local Law 5 of 2024) |
| White Plains | A Rental Housing Registry and License program for rental one-family homes up to 12-unit buildings, with inspections and annual licenses. | City Building Department program page |
| Yonkers | No short-term-rental chapter in the City Code. Ask the city what zoning allows at your address. | City Code, ecode360 |
| New Rochelle | No short-term-rental chapter in the City Code; zoning Ch. 331 sets what each district allows. | City Code, ecode360 |
| Greenburgh | No short-term-rental chapter in the Town Code, which covers the unincorporated areas. Each of the six villages has a code of its own. | Town Code, ecode360 |
In the other 20 towns and cities, including Mount Pleasant, Cortlandt, Ossining, Rye and Scarsdale, ask your building department before renting short-term. When a tenant moves out, New York gives the landlord 14 days to return the deposit with an itemized statement, with no deductions for ordinary wear and tear (General Obligations Law 7-108). A clean unit shows its real condition; no cleaner can promise a deposit back.
What people across Westchester ask for most
After general house cleaning, these are the services on our list that Westchester residents search Google for most, as a monthly average (DataForSEO, pulled 19 September 2026):

|---|---|
| Carpet & upholstery cleaning | 2,140 |
| Deep cleaning | 1,150 |
| Floor, tile & grout cleaning | 990 |
| After-construction cleanup | 880 |
| Home disinfecting | 740 |
Floor and grout work ranks high in a county where 27.5% of homes were built before 1940. Once a first deep clean has caught up on the build-up, weekly or biweekly cleaning keeps it there. See how we price a visit for what changes the quote.
Common questions about house cleaning across Westchester County
How much does house cleaning cost across Westchester County?
There is no single price, because Westchester homes run from a median of 4.1 rooms in Mount Vernon to 9 or more in Scarsdale. The quote turns on your rooms and bathrooms, the time since the last deep clean, how often you want us and add-ons such as the inside of the oven. Send those details and we usually reply the same day; the pricing page explains what moves the number.
Which sales tax rate applies to my home across Westchester County?
The rate follows where the home is, not the name on your mail: the Tax Department warns that ZIP codes do not line up with tax boundaries and asks sellers to use its address lookup instead. A home inside the city of Yonkers pays 8.875%; a home anywhere else in the county pays 8.375%, including Mount Vernon, New Rochelle and White Plains. Carpet and upholstery cleaning is exempt in New York wherever you live.
Do you clean apartments and co-ops across Westchester County?
Yes. A quarter of Westchester homes (25.2%) are in buildings with 20 or more units. Tell us the building's rules when you book: elevator reservations, where to park or unload, the hours work is allowed and whether the doorman or super needs names in advance. Our apartment and condo cleaning is sized for smaller floor plans, and a move-out clean can be timed to your lease end.
When is the busiest time to book a cleaning across Westchester County?
Google Trends for New York shows house-cleaning searches highest in July and August and lowest in February and March, averaged over 2022 to 2025. Spring-cleaning searches jump in March and April, and move-out cleaning peaks in August. If you need a date in summer, ask for your quote early; if you are flexible, late winter is when the fewest people are looking.
