White Plains lies to the north, Eastchester to the south, and Scarsdale differs from both on every line. The Census stops counting rooms at nine, so the true median Scarsdale house may be larger than the table can show; the White Plains median is 4.2 rooms and Eastchester's is 5.4. Eastchester is closer to Scarsdale in age, and inside it the Census shows Bronxville village with 69.9% of homes built before 1940, older than Scarsdale's 48.0%, though Bronxville puts 32.9% of its homes in buildings of 20 or more units and Scarsdale puts 2.6%. Big, old and detached is the Scarsdale pattern, and it changes how a visit is planned in four ways.

In a large house, dated photographs of each floor after the final cleaning are the simplest record of the condition you left. The landlord, the lease and the law decide the outcome; a cleaning company cannot.

Carpet, rug, drapery and upholstery cleaning is listed as exempt in the state's quick reference guide TB-ST-740, so if a visit includes that work the tax applies only to the rest.
What should a first deep cleaning cover in a house built before 1940?
The build-up that a routine visit never reaches. Radiator fins and the wall behind them, the tops of picture rails, door and window casings, the grout of original tile, the inside of window sashes and storm frames, and the edges of old wood floors where dust settles under the finish. Can you clean the windows on a three-story house in Scarsdale?
