The homes we clean in Milford

Orange lies along Milford's northern edge, and Stratford faces it across the Housatonic River in Fairfield County. Here is how the three compare in the Census Bureau's latest five-year survey. West Haven, Stratford and Shelton have pages of their own; Orange is covered on our New Haven County page, and the rest of Fairfield County on our Fairfield County page.

Mostly houses, of middling size. 67.4% of Milford homes are detached single-family houses, almost the same as Stratford's 68.5%, and both towns have a median of 5.8 rooms. Orange, at 88.4% detached and 7.1 rooms, runs larger. Since most Milford homes are whole houses rather than apartments, tell us about finished basements, extra floors and bonus rooms when you ask for a quote; they count toward the time as much as the bedroom total does.

Post-war, with older homes mixed in. The median Milford home was built in 1965, a year after the Orange median and seven years after Stratford's. Still, 18.0% of Milford homes were built in 1939 or earlier, and those bring plaster, radiators and original woodwork that add time to a visit.

Mostly owners. Owners live in 17,070 of Milford's 22,527 occupied homes. That 75.8% is below Orange and Stratford but well above West Haven, where the owner share is 50.6%.

Homes that sit empty part of the year. The seasonal count carries a Census margin of error of plus or minus 209 units, so read it as an estimate; the neighbors' smaller counts are less certain still. A house closed for a season collects dust on every flat surface, and the fridge, drains and closets need attention before anyone moves back in.

What Milford homes usually need

Year-round houses

For owner-occupied houses, weekly and biweekly cleaning is the base: kitchens, bathrooms, floors, dusting and the rooms you use most, on a standing day. Add a deep cleaning once or twice a year for baseboards, door frames, vents and the areas regular visits pass over. If a finished basement or a sunroom gets little use, it can rotate into every other visit instead of every visit, which keeps the regular visit shorter.

Opening and closing a seasonal home

For the 512 units kept for seasonal or occasional use, the pattern is two visits: a thorough clean to open the house, and a lighter one to close it, with an emptied and wiped fridge, clean bathrooms and floors that will not greet you with grit next time. Tell us the dates you arrive and leave; an opening clean set for the day before you arrive means the house is ready when the car is unpacked.

Short-term rentals between guests

Permitted hosts need a turnover between each stay. Airbnb and vacation rental cleaning resets the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen for the next arrival; tell us where linens are stored and where the guest packet belongs.

Glass near the water

Milford runs along Long Island Sound, and houses near the shore take the weather on their windows first. Window cleaning covers glass, sills, tracks and screens.

Moving day

People search for move-out cleaning in Milford by name, and move-in and move-out cleaning is built for it: the whole empty house, closets and cabinets included, between the movers and the walk-through.

Plan summer dates early. In the Hartford and New Haven television market, Google searches for house cleaning run highest in June, July and August and lowest in January, February and December (Google Trends, 2021 to 2025).

Moving, renting and short-term rentals in Milford

Milford is mostly an owners' town: 5,457 of its 22,527 households rent. Next door in West Haven, 10,348 of 20,938 households do.

The short-term rental ordinance

Milford's Board of Aldermen approved Chapter 11, Article V of the city Code of Ordinances, Short-Term Residential Rentals (Secs. 11-160 through 11-172), on 4 May 2026. The ordinance is dated 8 May 2026 and had not yet been folded into the printed code as of 19 September 2026. It defines a short-term rental as furnished living space rented for one to 30 consecutive days. For hosts, these parts matter most:

  • No owner may offer or operate a short-term rental without a city permit, and a copy must be posted in a visible spot in the main area of the unit (Sec. 11-162).
  • A permit is good for one year, must be renewed each year, and is void when the property changes hands (Sec. 11-163).
  • Owners who were already listing when the ordinance took effect had 60 days to obtain a permit (Sec. 11-163(a)).
  • A hosted rental is the owner's primary residence with the owner on site. For an un-hosted rental, the owner or a named agent must be local, which the ordinance defines as within 30 miles (Secs. 11-160 and 11-164).
  • Guests must receive an information packet that includes where the trash and recycling bins are and what goes in each (Sec. 11-166(h)).
  • Homeowners' and condominium associations may adopt stricter rules of their own (Sec. 11-161(b)).

These rules are Milford's own. Every Connecticut town writes its own, so a home across the line in Orange, West Haven, Stratford or Shelton answers to whatever that town has adopted.

Security deposits for long-term tenants

If you rent year-round, Connecticut's deposit law gives your landlord 21 days from the end of the tenancy, or 15 days from receiving your forwarding address in writing if that comes later, to return the deposit or itemize any deductions (CGS 47a-21(d)(2)); a move-out clean supports your case but can never promise the result.

Common questions about house cleaning in Milford

What does Milford's permit ordinance mean for turnover cleaning?

The ordinance sets permit, safety and conduct rules, not cleaning standards. Two details matter on turnover day: the permit copy has to stay posted in the unit's main area, and the guest packet must say where trash and recycling go. Tell us where both live and how you sort recycling, so each turnover leaves them in place for the next guest.

Can you open or close a seasonal house in Milford?

Yes. Opening usually calls for a deep clean: dust on every surface, a stale kitchen, bathrooms that sat unused. Closing is lighter and is about leaving nothing behind that spoils, so plan the fridge and pantry into it. Fridge and oven cleaning can be added to either visit. Book both as soon as you know your dates, especially for summer.

What do house cleaners charge in Milford?

We quote each home rather than publish a rate, since a 5.8-room median house, a seasonal home and a one-bedroom rental are very different jobs. What moves the number: size and floors, bathrooms, how long since the last professional clean, how often you want us back, and extras like the inside of the oven. Our pricing page walks through it.

Do Milford cleaning bills include Connecticut sales tax?

They should. Connecticut's janitorial services regulation (Sec. 12-407(2)(i)(Y)-1) covers the cleaning of dwellings, whether done on a schedule or once, such as after a renovation, and CGS 12-408 sets the rate at 6.35%. Milford has no local sales tax of its own, so 6.35% is the full rate.

Do you clean homes after a move in Milford?

Yes. Move-out and move-in cleaning happen in an empty house, which lets us reach inside cabinets, closets and appliances and along every baseboard. Whether a lease is ending or a sale is closing, give us the date and we'll plan the clean for the gap between the movers and the walk-through.

Can I run a short-term rental in a Milford condo or an income-restricted unit?

Not in an income-restricted one: the city ordinance bars short-term rentals in units that are affordable or income-restricted, or that receive housing or rental assistance (Sec. 11-161(a)). In a condo, check your association first, because associations may adopt rules stricter than the city's, and the stricter rule wins (Sec. 11-161(b)). The turnover cleaning itself is the same either way.
