| Median rooms per home | 9 or more | 5.1 | 9 or more |
| Median year built | 1967 | 1967 | 1967 |
| Built before 1940 | 19.0% | 18.9% | 12.2% |
The table puts Westport between its two most different neighbors. Toward Norwalk, on the west, the housing gets smaller and denser: fewer than half of Norwalk's homes are detached, and its median home has 5.1 rooms. Toward Weston, to the north, it gets even more uniformly large and owner-occupied: 96.6% detached, 0.3% in big buildings, and only 109 renting households in the whole town against Westport's 1,097. All three towns share a median year built of 1967, so what changes at the town lines is the size and shape of the housing, not its age.
The other two neighbors fall in between. Fairfield, along the eastern border, comes close to Westport on ownership at 83.3%, but its median home has 7.0 rooms and dates from 1960. Wilton, which touches Westport only briefly, has a median of 8.3 rooms and 6.4% of its homes in buildings of 20 or more units.
Three named neighborhoods, three kinds of house
The Census also reports on smaller areas inside the town. Three of them show how much the housing changes from one part of Westport to another.
- Westport Village (1,172 households, the downtown area) has the oldest housing: 28.7% of its homes were built before 1940, and 8.6% are in buildings of 20 or more units. Its median home has 7.9 rooms.
- Saugatuck (1,154 households) has 23.7% of homes built before 1940, none in buildings of 20 or more units, and a median of 7.4 rooms.
- Greens Farms (1,060 households) has the newest housing, with a median year built of 1986, and its median home reaches the Census ceiling of 9 or more rooms. 84.9% of its homes are detached houses.
What that means for a Westport visit
- Room count is a starting point, not the whole quote. Two houses with nine rooms can have two bathrooms or five, hardwood throughout or carpet upstairs. The quote form asks for bathrooms and floor types because those set the time.
- Levels. With 87.7% of homes detached, most Westport visits involve stairs, and often a finished basement or a third-floor room. Say which levels you want included so nothing is assumed.
- Older finishes downtown and in Saugatuck. Plaster walls, radiators, original wood floors and painted trim need hand work rather than a quick wipe, and they take longer than the same square footage in drywall and tile.
- Newer houses in Greens Farms. Open kitchens with large islands, more glass and more hard-floor area shift the work toward floors and windows and away from small closed rooms.
- Owner entry. In a town where 88.8% of households own, the usual arrangements are a gate code, an alarm code or a key, not a front desk. Put those instructions in the booking and we follow them on every visit.
What Westport homes usually need
Large detached houses, owned rather than rented, with a mix of pre-war homes and newer ones: those facts point to a handful of services, and each one has its own page.
- Weekly & biweekly cleaning
A house with 9 or more rooms drifts fast between one-off cleanings. A fixed rhythm keeps each visit shorter and the house steadier.
- Deep cleaning
The first visit to a big house, or a spring and fall reset that reaches baseboards, the insides of cabinets and the space behind appliances.
- Window cleaning
A detached house has glass on four sides and often two or three floors of it. Pairing it with a seasonal deep cleaning saves a second trip.
- After-construction cleanup
Kitchen and bath renovations in the town's older houses leave fine dust in every room. This is the cleaning that follows the contractor.
- Move-in & move-out cleaning
In an owners' town, most moves follow a sale. An empty house between the closing and the moving truck is the easiest one to clean thoroughly.
Extras such as the inside of the refrigerator and oven, or a load of laundry, are on the add-ons page and can ride along with any of the above. The searches people run about Westport are plain ones, "house cleaning Westport" and "house cleaning services Westport CT," plain requests for a company to take on a full house. Our pricing page explains how the size of a house, the number of bathrooms and how often we come combine into a quote.
Moving, renting and short-term rentals in Westport
Renting is uncommon here. Of Westport's 9,778 households, 1,097 rent, and they are spread across the town's named areas: 195 in Westport Village, 179 in Saugatuck and 95 in Greens Farms. Next door the range is wide, from 109 renting households in Weston to 3,597 in Fairfield and 15,983 in Norwalk. So a move in Westport usually means a closing rather than a lease ending, and the cleaning that fits is the one done in the empty house between the seller's last day and the buyer's first. Book a move-in or move-out cleaning once the closing date is set.
Short-term rentals
What is published at the state level is clear. The Connecticut Office of Legislative Research listed 12 towns that expressly regulate short-term rentals in its report 2024-R-0044 of 15 February 2024 (read 19 September 2026); Westport is not on that list. The same office's report 2026-R-0025 (read 19 September 2026) explains that Public Act 24-143, section 7, has let a town's legislative body adopt an ordinance to regulate and license short-term rentals since 1 October 2024. Whether Westport has used that authority, and how its zoning treats a rental of 30 days or less at your address, is a question for the town's planning and zoning office before a listing goes live. A neighborhood association or condominium declaration can add limits of its own.
Hosts can book Airbnb and vacation rental cleaning for the reset between one guest's check-out and the next check-in. Westport also has homes that sit empty for stretches: the Census counts 214 held for seasonal, recreational or occasional use, with a margin of error of 113, so treat that as a rough figure. A cleaning booked for the day before you return is the simplest way to walk into a fresh house.
Security deposits in Connecticut
For the town's renters, state law sets the clock on a deposit: the landlord has 21 days after the tenancy ends, or 15 days after receiving a written forwarding address, whichever is later, and must send an itemized statement of any deductions (CGS 47a-21(d)(2)). The Connecticut Department of Banking's rental security deposit page (read 19 September 2026) adds that the deposit comes back with interest. A move-out cleaning leaves the unit in the condition you want the landlord to see; the decision about the deposit is still the landlord's.
Common questions about house cleaning in Westport
What sets the time for a Westport house cleaning?
It depends more on bathrooms, floors and levels than on the room count. A house at Westport's median of 9 or more rooms can be a three-bathroom colonial on two floors or a five-bathroom house with a finished basement, and those are different visits. The first cleaning runs longest because it sets the baseline; regular visits after that are shorter. Give us bedrooms, bathrooms, floor types and the levels you want covered, and the quote will come with a realistic time.
Does a Westport cleaning invoice carry sales tax?
Yes, at Connecticut's statewide 6.35% (CGS 12-408). The state regulation on janitorial services, Sec. 12-407(2)(i)(Y)-1, covers cleaning the interior or exterior of dwellings, whether on a schedule or on a single occasion, and it names floor, wall and woodwork cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning, dusting and vacuuming among its examples. The same regulation explains why a housekeeper you employ directly is treated differently: wages paid to your own employee are not a taxable service, and an individual who cleans three or fewer residences a year as a casual sale is not taxed either. A cleaning company's invoice is.
Do you clean in Greens Farms, Saugatuck and downtown Westport?
Yes, all three, and the houses differ enough that we ask which one you are in. In Greens Farms, where the median year built is 1986, the work leans toward large kitchens, open floors and glass. In Saugatuck and the village, where 23.7% and 28.7% of homes date from before 1940, more of the visit goes to older trim, radiators and wood floors. Tell us the neighborhood and the age of the house and we set the time to match.
Can you clean a Westport house that sits empty for part of the year?
Yes. Some Westport homes are used seasonally or on occasional weekends, and dust, dead insects and stale bathrooms are what you find on arrival. The useful order is one deep cleaning before you come back, regular visits while you are in residence, then a closing clean when you leave. Tell us the dates and how to get in when nobody is home.
Can you clean before a showing, a closing or move-in day?
Yes, and the timing matters. Before showings, a deep cleaning with the windows done makes the house photograph and show well. For a closing, schedule the cleaning after the last furniture is out, when floors, closets and cabinet interiors can be reached. For a move-in, book it for the gap between the closing and the truck. Say which of the three you need and the date you are working toward.
Do you also clean in Weston, Wilton and Fairfield?
Yes. All four of Westport's neighbors are in our service area. Fairfield and Norwalk have pages of their own. Weston and Wilton are covered on the Fairfield County page. A quote for any of them goes through the same form and asks the same questions: size, bathrooms, levels and how often.
